hi all. if a contactor is rated at say 30A does that mean each pole is rated for 30A? or is it combined 30A. thanx alot.

    Re: lighting contactors

Hi! If a contactor is rated at 30A, that typically means each pole is rated for 30A individually, not a combined total. So on a 3-pole contactor, each leg can handle 30A. Just make sure to check the manufacturer’s datasheet to confirm ratings for your specific model. Better just contact an electrical contractor

    Re: lighting contactors

In simple terms, a 3-pole (3P) 30A contactor means that each of its contacts is designed to handle a current of 30A. In a standard 3-phase circuit, this means it can safely control a load with a total power of approximately 30A × 3 phases = 90A.

    Understanding "Rated Current"

Independent per pole: The ratings of most industrial contactors are for each main contact. Therefore, the 30A you see is usually the capacity per pole.

Product labeling: Many product specifications will explicitly state "30 amps per phase" or similar wording to clarify this.

Different application categories: The rated current of a contactor will vary depending on its application category (e.g., AC-1, AC-3). For example, a contactor might be rated 30A for resistive loads (AC-1) but a lower rating for motor loads (AC-3).
